Meeting with the mayor of Konstancin

Marek Skowronski, the mayor of Konstancin-Jeziorna came to ASW and met with Mr. Schaffner's 10th grade comparative government class on May 19th, 2010. Mr. Skowronski is a member of the conservative PIS party. He spoke to our class about major political issues and his role in the local government of Konstancin.
Mr. Skowronski mentioned that the street near our school will be widened this year, and the government will build a permanent bike path in front of the school.

  1. The mayor forgot to mention a few details:
    1) The widening of Warszawska St is financed by the Mazovian Province, which has just gone bankrupt, so the project may have to wait even several years,
    2) Warsaw is not interested in co-financing the project, so the short section of the unwidened road on Warsaw's side may remain as it is, with no investment made in this "bottleneck",
    3) There is no room for building a bike path on Konstancin's side (after the widening, the road will come to the very border of private plots and there won't even be any space for a dirt path),
    4) Konstancin's mayor promised a large network of bike paths 8 years ago. Of these, only about 1.5 km have been built, but they end at busy roundabouts or crossroads and there is no access to them.
    5) The mayor hopes to be reelected this year for a third term, despite the fact that it was under his tenure that Konstancin Spa lost its only sewage treatment plant to a private owner, an asphalt plant has been built in a spa zone spreading a nauseating stench over a large area, and none of the major problems of the town (roads, town hall, sewage, chaotic development) has been solved.

We have already addressed your school a few times with an offer of co-operation on the project of building a network of bike paths in our town and opposing the investments that could do seriously harm our environment. But we cannot help the impression that you are isolating yourselves - not only behind a few lines of guards, cameras and protective zones, but also behind your self-centred point of view which fails to notice that your own interests coincide with the interests of the entire community.

We hope this might change. Although the easiest way would be to delete my comment and forget about it, wouldn't it?
